Monitoring

Core packs in the Yellowstone, central Idaho, and NW Montana are generally in their normal home ranges. However, many packs are split or have members missing. Two females, #153 and #156 have left the Rose Crk pack with one going to the east side and one to the west side of YNP. Wolf #9 from the Rose Creek pack traveled over by Cooke City and #147 from the Chief Joseph pack went to the Crandal Creek area and #164 to Hell Roaring. Wolves #104 and #92 are both missing. The Gros Ventre pack and Jackson pack have returned to their normal home range.

The Bass Creek pack, which will be called the Spotted Bear pack in the future, that was placed in Spotted Bear in NW Montana was last located about 5 miles south of where they were released. They were feeding on what appeared to be a deer kill. The male from Pleasant Valley is still with them.

Wolves are dispersing and we anticipate a sharp increase in new wolf pack formation. Please report wolf sightings so that we can focus aircraft searches or our track surveys this winter.

In preparation of the winter season in YNP, Doug Smith gave a talk to about 100 AMFAC employees and about 30 Park interpreters.

Information is being gathered in Helena from the tri-state recovery area for the annual report which should be completed about February, 2000.
