Very cold temperatures in Yellowstone Park, Montana and Wyoming.
By Ralph Maughan

On the morning of Feb. 24, the mercury dropped to -51 F (-46 C) at Grant Village on the SW shore of Yellowstone Lake.

The arctic blast covered much of Montana and Wyoming, but the coldest temperature was at Grant Village. Other places in the Park were very frigid, with the entrance town of West Yellowstone at -45, Canyon -44, Old Faithful -42, and Lamar Ranger Station at -40. Mammoth Hot Springs was a relatively balmy -24. Wisdom, Montana, outside the Park in the SW corner of Montana recorded a temperature of -49.

By this morning, Feb. 25, the lows were still breathtaking, but had warmed at bit. Canyon was the cold spot at -44, Grant Village -42, West Yellowstone -39, Old Faithful was -34, and Mammoth -23.

A warming trend is on the way with lows expected from 0 to -30. With the exception of this week, by and large it has been a mild winter in Yellowstone with above average temperatures and, for the 4th year, below average snow.

The record low temperature for Yellowstone Park is -66 at Madison Jct. in 1933.
