Trapper Peak, the highest point in the Bitterroot Range. Photo from near
Darby, Montana. October 2001.
The Bitterroot Range is a massive range along the Idaho-Montana border. It
presents an imposing front from Darby, Montana on the south to Stevensville,
Montana on the north.
Along the front is the Bitterroot Valley, a formerly pastoral place, but now
largely sub-divided.
West of the crest of the range, are the Salmon River and Clearwater Mountains
for many miles to the west, north and south.
The reintroduced wolves arrived quickly to the Bitterroot Mountains, and have
found the more gentle parts to their liking with 3 or 4 packs in the general
area as of the year 2005. The wolves prefer the northern, southern and west
side of the range. The Front is too rugged and rocky.
