Challis is the county seat of Custer County, Idaho. January 1997. It sits in
Round Valley, through which flows the Salmon River.
The population of Challis was 909 in the 2000 census, down from 1073 in 1990.
Challis and Stanley, Idaho are the largest places in rural Custer County. Both
have a population of less than a thousand. Stanley has only about 300 full time
residents.
Custer county is about 95% public land; thus a recreation paradise, and home to
much wildlife including a number of wolf packs.
