Cinnabar Basin, Montana

Looking across Cinnabar Basin eastward toward the Absaroka Mountains of Montana. Cinnabar Basin is a small basin just a few miles north of Yellowstone National Park, an inholding of private land surrounded by national forest. The Chief Joseph Pack denned here once despite the obvious pastures and development. Now biologists are vigilant, and try hard to discourage wolf denning in the area.
In 2004, the Swan Lake Pack also began to visit the Basin, although that pack has now dispersed to the four winds.
