Mackay, East Central Idaho
Mackay and Mt. McCaleb. 3-18-02 Mackay (MACK ee) is a small town in the Big Lost River Valley, located at the base of Mount McCaleb (photo) in the Lost River Range. On the other side of town the less known, but also lofty, White Knob Mountains rise. Mackay owes its origin to mining, but the mines in the adjacent White Knob Mountains played out long ago. Now Mackay is a farming and tourist community. Population was 574 in 1990 and 566 in the 2000 census. Wolves are beginning to show up to the west and northwest of Mackay in the White Knob Mountains, and Copper Basin area. This is one of my favorite parts of Idaho for seeing antelope and impressive mountains. |
