Stanley, Idaho (pop 290) has one of the most scenic locations of any town in the United
States. It has always been primarily a recreational village except during the
early days. Stanley is surrounded by the Sawtooth National Recreation Area
which was created in 1972 in part to prevent (and eliminate) subdivisions which
otherwise would have long ago destroyed this scenic mountain area (Stanley Basin
and adjacent Sawtooth Valley).
Elk, deer, bighorn sheep, coyotes, and wolves are found on the edges (or
inside town). Stanley is the takeoff point for many rafting trips into the
Middle Fork of the Salmon River and nearby streams. Stanley actually consists
of two sections -- Upper Stanley at the confluence of Valley Creek and the
Salmon River and Lower Stanley, a mile downstream on the bank of the Salmon
River.
