Chief Joseph Pack with seven pups

6-3-98

It has now been confirmed that the Chief Joseph Pack, alphas 33F and 34M, have a litter of seven pups in the NW corner of Yellowstone. This is the first litter for no. 33F, who was brought with no. 31M, 32F, and 34M from British Columbia in the winter of 1996. They were released in March 1996 from the Nez Perce enclosure as the Chief Joespeh Pack.

Last year number 34M sired a litter with two females that had dispersed from the Rose Creek Pack -- no. 16F and no. 17F.  When number 17 was killed chasing prey, number 33F was there to join with her former packmate and care for the pups.

Prior to these seven new pups, the Chief Joseph pack numbered six -- the two alphas and four surviving yearlings from the union of 34 and 17. Now the pack numbers 13.

Former Chief Joseph pack members, no. 32F (the first alpha female of the pack), and no. 31M, are now dead. Number 32 was killed by a semi-truck on US 191. Number 31M became a member of the Druid Peak pack, but he was eventually illegally killed in late 1997 by an unknown person or persons. Number 31M had been the beta male of the Druid Peak Pack.
