Valley County Commissioner (Idaho) and ranch hand fined in wolf killing

June 30, 2004

Earlier I reported that a wolf (B116M) from the Orphan Pack had been found dead on the land of a prominent politician in Valley County, Idaho (Cascade, McCall area). The killing has perhaps left the Orphan pack female alone with her pups.

Now the well known "secret" that it was indeed one of the county commissioners (Phil Davis) has been reported. Both Davis and his ranch hand will be fined $750, which is slightly more than those who give the standard excuse . . . "I thought it was a coyote," which almost always generates a fine of $500.

The illegal killing was on May 25. Because a wolf is near cattle does not mean it is about to kill the cattle. Wolves very frequently pass through cattle herds ignoring them completely.

Here is the June 30 story from the Idaho Statesman by Rocky Barker.
