Two Idaho Wolves Found dead near the head of Panther Creek

Dead Wolves were Pups from Jureano Mountain Pack

8-6-98 (updated on 8-8 and on 10-6)

According to a story in the Post Register, two wolves have been found dead near the head of Panther Creek.  They are probably from the Moyer Basin Pack, which killed several cattle a week ago.

Panther Creek is way back in the Salmon River Mountains, but a gravel road runs along the creek all the way.  The Cobalt area is kind of a ghost town, but a few people live there.  There are a few ranches along this drainage.

It turns out that the two dead wolves were pups-of-the-year.  The were found in the Napias Creek drainage.  This is near Panther Creek, but it is clearly part of Jureano Mountain pack's territory, not the Moyer Basin Pack.  The cause of death of the two pups from the Jureano Pack is as of yet unknown but it appears to be unrelated to the recent cattle depredation by the Moyer Basin Pack near Cobalt on Panther Creek. Curt Mark, head of the Nez Perce Tribal Wolf Team said the pups' remains were being examined the the Fish and Wildlife Service's lab in Ashland, Oregon.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service finally announced in October that it appears the pups died of natural causes.
