Update on the Druids. New Black seems to be the new alpha male
11-9-2004
Here is the latest news on Yellowstone's most watched wolf pack -- the Druid Peak Pack.
In the last report, the Druids had been suddenly attacked by two roaming members of Mollie's Pack and Druid 302M was injured. The next day the new Druid nicknamed "the new black" fought with one of the Mollie's wolves and injured him. After that the Mollies wolves returned to the Pelican Valley and their pack. These two Mollies wolves are roamers, however, and have come back to the northern range before to meld with the Slough Creek Pack.
Since the attack, 302M continues to favor one of his hind legs, but seems to be healing. The New Black, who first came to the Druid's as 302's "friend," now acts like the alpha male and other pack members treat him that way. 302M no longer does RLUs (raised leg urinations -- a sign of dominance, although not necessarily of "alphahood"). 286F seems to be the alpha female.
What a change in year! Then it was 21M and 42F, now it's an alpha from outside the pack and 286F. 302M seemed to be a alpha-in-waiting with only 253M standing in his way.
Just two pups of the year seem to be with the Druids in the Lamar Valley. The pack has been stable at 11 wolves for some time now. The fate of the rest of the pups is unknown.
The Druids made a kill on Druid Peak yesterday and today moved further northeast. The whereabouts of Druids 253, 350, 373, 376 is again not known, nor is it known if any of the unaccounted pups are with them.
Some speculation as to why 253M did not make strong bid to become alpha male has centered on the strength of the New Black. However, Rick McIntyre pointed out that it may be just as likely that he was not inclined to have 286F as his mate due to their close biological relation, and 253 does seek out new opportunities. After all, he went to Utah.
The New Black is probably from the Leopold Pack. That's where 302M originated.
