Green River Pack in trouble again. New alpha male shot for "depredations."

9-30-2003

The happy news of a month ago that the struggling Green River Pack had a new alpha male (267M, a Teton Pack disperser to replace the old alpha that was killed for killing cow calves) has gone bad. He was recently shot by Wildlife Services after the pack killed a cow and a calf.

It is certainly too bad that livestock prevent real wildness to exist near the scenic Green River lakes where this pack lives. At least the area has increasing numbers of grizzly bears to make the Bridger Wilderness more than a nice hike, good granite, and pretty photos.

Meanwhile, across the Green River Basin to the west, the newly discovered Daniel Pack has not been in any more trouble, although a dead wolf was found. USFWS writes: "It is being examined by LE to determine if it is a wild wolf or related to the captured pups. Its feet appeared somewhat smaller than expected, it was ‘found’ under unclear circumstances and not reported for several days. We have removed at least 3 released captive wolves in this general area." Let's hope we are not getting a hybrid wolf problem in the area.

In other Wyoming wolf news, up north near (west of) Cody the mangy Absaroka Pack has killed a couple more calves. They are still trying to get some more collars on that pack because they only have one. Ed Bangs told me nowadays they always carried the anti-mange drug Ivermectin with them and give a wolf with mange a shot if they catch it. Unfortunately, the effects of the drug killing the mites doesn't' do much good if the rest of the pack has it because of reinfection.
