I finally have some news about the other Jackson Hole area wolf pack, the Gros Ventre Pack, composed of adults 29M, 129F, and 137F. The later two are sisters from the old Thorofare Pack which was destroyed when its then-adult members were killed in an attack by the Soda Butte Pack and an avalanche in the winter of 1997-8.
They have 4-5 pups and their summer range is the side drainages of the Gros Ventre River, east of the valley of Jackson Hole. This is on the Bridger-Teton National Forest. Despite many cattle in area, the pack has not been involved in depredations until the other day, when a rancher reported a calf(s) depredation and the pack was tracked by aircraft right near the scene.
If the depredation is confirmed, the order may go out to shoot the nearly toothless alpha male, no. 29M, the famous escape artist wolf who lost his teeth in his many escapes from the Nez Perce enclosure in Yellowstone NP. Many of my previous stories mention this amazing wolf.
8-26-99. It turned out that while at least two wolves had fed on the carcass, the carcass was so deteriorated that no determination could be made if the wolves killed it. As a result no wolves will be dispatched.
