Leopolds drive Geode Pack from kill.
Nez Perce on the northern range too.

11-20-2004

There has been a lot of wolf activity seen on the northern range the last few days. The packs are coming into conflict.

Perhaps most impressive, the Geode Pack was in the core of its range on Hellroaring Slopes on a kill they had made, Along came the Leopold Pack (22 of them counted) and drove the Geodes from their kill. Then the Leopold Pack killed another elk in the area (the pack has 27 members).

Rick McIntrye also told me that the Agate Creek Pack was in the Tower Junction area today. On top of that for the first time in 2 years, the Nez Perce Pack (15 counted) came from central Yellowstone to the northern range on Thursday. They were seen on Mom's Ridge, and then on Friday they were on Specimen Ridge. So the Geode Pack was pretty well surrounded.

The Nez Perce were not seen today, but there was an encounter between the Slough Creek Pack and the Druids on the north side of Lamar Canyon. The details are a bit vague (meaning I need to talk to the folks who watched it).

The "new pack" in the Soda Butte Creek area hasn't been seen for two days, except for a black pup, thought to be part of the pack.  The pup was near Soda Butte Cone.
