12-27-99. Montana press fell down on Libby story. Column by Todd Wilkinson. Wilkinson asks why the Montana media didn't break the story about the Libby tragedy? My view: how come Montana keeps electing guys like Racicot, and seem to love him when they have some of lowest wages in the country, one of the poorest education systems, and have a beautiful natural environment that is seriously unraveling? Historians will tell you Montana has mostly been a state run by the interests -- formerly it was the "Company" -- Anaconda. Now it's by other interests.

12-21-99. Asbestos mine tragedy befalls Libby, Montana. In case you hadn't heard, deaths and disability of an unprecedented proportion have befallen the NW Montana town of Libby. They are the result of a vermiculite mine that operated for many years, but was closed in the early 90s. The non-toxic vermiculite was contaminated with naturally-occurring asbestos.
