The wolf pack that suddenly left Yellowstone to travel westward has been located, and it is quite a way west. They have been located about thirty miles south of the town of Dillon, Montana and ten miles north of the Interstate highway wayside hamlet of Lima, Montana. This is about 100 miles due west of the west boundary of Yellowstone. The pack, which has no official name, consists of wolves 27F, 29M, 37F, presumably 29 and 37's three pups -- 92M, 93M, and 94M -- and Sawtooth yearlings no. 67F, 70M, and 72M. The area they are in has plenty of elk and deer to eat as well as antelope (if the wolves run fast). The area is also west of north/south-running Interstate Highway 15, so the pack crossed the Interstate. This place is close to the Continental Divide and the Idaho border. Note: my statement that they crossed the Interstate is not correct. As of 10/4 they were still east of the Interstate and had moved north to about 20 miles south of Dillon.
In other news, wolf no. 16 and her pups have still not been located, except for one pup who apparently never hitched up with her. One of her pups, no. 109, a little black "guy" is still near U.S. 191 in the Park. A angler recently saw him, and some people saw him feeding on a vehicle-killed deer fawn on the U.S. 191 speedway. They stopped and pulled the fawn away from the road so the pup wouldn't be the next casualty on this speedway.
Here's a little news on the Druid Peak pack. A friend here in Pocatello, Dr. Keene Hueftle, observed Druid Peak Pack wolf no. 39F in the Lamar Valley with a black pup for three or four hours last Wednesday. Later no. 39F, the "white wolf", and the pup went up into the timber on SE side of Specimen Ridge to join the rest of the Druids. No. 39 has apparently been doing a lot of baby sitting lately, and is clearly no longer the pack's alpha female, although it is not clear which female is. Well what do you expect if you take a six month vaction?
