A Valentine Surprise: Wolf no. 9 has a new pack
Feb. 19, 2000
There was a lot of speculation that famous wolf no. 9 was just going to starve to death or be killed by other wolves, but on Valentine's Day, it was determined that quite the opposite had happened. She is in a brand new pack and appear to be the alpha female. She may well have a litter of pups in late April. Here is the story in the Billings Gazette.
Because the pack was discovered on Valentine's Day, it will be named the Valentine Pack. Its range appears to be the Clark's Fork of the Yellowstone headwaters, must SE on Cooke City, Montana. That is just east of Yellowstone NP and mostly in Wyoming.
