Stanley Pack being trapped because they killed 3 sheep

8-4-2000

I am not going to be able to follow up on this because I leaving to do research for Hiking Idaho, but I have learned the Stanley Pack killed 3 sheep in Pole Creek at the southern end of the White Cloud mountains, and as a result the whole southern end of the White Clouds Mountains has been closed to human entry while Wildlife Services traps the pack of 14+. This pack spreads out in the summer, and I doubt the entire pack is in Pole Creek. Whether the wolves will moved or killed is not known.

Lynne Stone of the Boulder-While Clouds Council stated that the sheepherder kept a messy camp with carcasses around.

How many thousands of dollars of recreational revenues will be lost due to this closure is unknown.

When something like this happens. it sure reinforces how western Americans are second class citizens when it comes to ranchers. The supervisor of the Sawtooth National Forest ordered the closure after Wildlife Services trapper Jeff Ashmead of Arco asked for it.

To stand up for your rights and the wolves, call the Sawtooth National Recreation area at 208-727-5000. You can also call the Sawtooth National Forest at 208-737-3200, leave a message or try to talk to the Forest Supervisor.

Please don't email me because I will not be able to answer.
