Alpha male of Teton Pack killed by vehicle.

6-23-99

Tragedy has struck the Teton Pack. Alpha male 133M has been found dead near highway 26 in Grand Teton National Park. He was apparently hit by a semi-truck Now wolf 24F has five pups to raise alone. This is the first confirmed wolf pack in Jackson Hole in 50 years. An investigation of the incident is under way.

With this pack in jeopardy, there is a real question whether the Yellowstone experimental population area will produce ten wolf packs this year. If every pack or pair except the Soda Butte Pack had pups this year, this is the tenth pack. If any others do not have pups or lose theirs, this will be yet another year the Yellowstone experimental area does not reach even the minimum goal of ten packs.  If the Greater Yellowstone area can't produce ten wolf packs after 4 years, talk about the great wolf population success and the prospect of speedy delisting seems very premature to me. Only Idaho seems to be able to meet even the minimum goals of Northern Rockies wolf recovery.

Of yes, folks will want to know . . . Wyoming Department of Transportation has plans in the works to make Highway 26 faster and wider.
