Statement on Twin Peaks Wolf Pack
By Dave Nelson
February 18, 2000
In recent months and years, ranchers in my area have often said 'we
can live with wolves if we can manage wolves'. Unfortunately, the events of
the last few days show that wolves are not being properly managed and some
ranchers feel like they can no longer live with wolves.

For weeks now one rancher in particular - Curt Hurless - feels like he has
been held hostage on his own private property. The details of this
situation are complex but the solution is really very simple.
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service should remove the entire remaining Twin
Peaks pack. The wolves continue to raise havoc not only with the livestock
but with the deer and elk that are in close proximity. If the Twin Peaks
wolves aren't removed the impact on both cattle and wildlife in the area
will be dramatic.
Our county officials, the Governor and the entire congressional delegation
from our state have been involved on this issue and as ranchers we greatly
appreciate that.
I hope the federal government will be just as quick in their response.

Nelson is a rancher from Mackay and is Vice President of the Idaho Cattle
Association.
