News Report: Hurless killed his own dog and left it for the wolves?

Feb. 18, 2000

The story gets stranger and stranger. After much of the Idaho political establishment and the Idaho Cattle Association weighed in, in favor of Hurless, whom they implied is being held captive by the wolves, KIFI, channel 8, television and other reports indicate that Hurless killed his own dog and left it in a nearby pasture. His motive is not known, but in KIFI's Feb. 17 news story, Hurless was reported as telling KIFI that the wolves had returned and dragged off the body of a dog.  I thought the phrasing of the story sounded odd, "HURLESS SAYS WOLVES WERE AT HIS RANCH AGAIN LAST NIGHT...AND DRUG OFF THE BODY OF A DOG INTO THE HILLS."  It sounded almost like the dog was already dead, and apparently so.

Will this bizarre story will continue?

Yes. Here is the story as told by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

"A couple of days ago the involved rancher caught his dog chasing cattle and he shot it.  The wolves found the dog's carcass and mauled it.  The rancher became very upset that wolves were back on his property.  This single depredation event was professionally and effectively  handled by the Tribe and Wildlife Services and the continued high level of controversy is difficult to rationally understand.  No further removal of wolves is planned, despite the
intense political pressure, unless further attacks on livestock can be documented occur."
