Salmon River Canyon from near the mouth of Horse Creek

Photo of the vicinity of the release site of the first Idaho wolves. This is a photo of the main Salmon River Canyon. The photo was taken taken from a mountain slope above and near the mouth of Horse Creek (a major tributary to the Salmon River) looking up-canyon. The photo was taken in late May.

The first four wolves to be returned to Idaho (B2,B3,B4, and B5) were released from their kennels at Corn Creek Bar about 2 miles upstream from Horse Creek. Release at this location was not originally the plan. The wolves had been scheduled for release on the Middle Fork of the Salmon River, but bad weather prevented the wilderness fly-in of the wolves. They were instead trucked over a treacherous icy road 40 miles downstream and released in the canyon of the main Salmon.
