Your comments on Wyoming's wolf plan are due May 16

5-13-97

Comments on Wyoming Department of Game and Fish's proposal for joint state-federal wolf management in Wyoming are due May 16. For information on this very important plan, see my article of April 5.

To date, almost no group has supported the plan. The anti-wolfers support the plan to require wolves be kept inside the boundaries of Yellowstone National Park, an admittedly illegal plan under the Endangered Species Act.

Those in favor of wolf restoration have supported the "common sense" plan that would allow wolves to settle where they may in Wyoming, and would "control" the wolves according to their behavior rather than their numbers. Others, such as myself, have supported continued management of the wolves by the American government because Wyoming is run by the livestock interests and can't be trusted for the forseeable future.

Send your comments to: Wolf Proposal, Wyoming Game and Fish Department, 5400 Bishop Blvd., Cheyenne, WY 82006.

The head of Wyoming's Dept. of Agriculture has been active in the last few days trying to drum up public comments against the wolf by claiming the wolves will decimate Wyoming's economy and greatly reduce game herds. This latter statement comes, ironically, at the same time some of the same ag intrests are accusing Yellowstone of improper management because there is too much game. And elk numbers in Wyoming outside of Grand Teton and Yellowstone national parks are far above Wyoming Game and Fish targets.
