Report on Wyoming Wolves Outside Yellowstone. Late Nov. 2000

Nov. 21, 2000

Here is the latest on wolves to the east and south of Yellowstone Park, which I'll call the "Wyoming wolves."

The information came mostly from Mike Jimenez who manages wolves for the federal government in Wyoming. This is my interpretation of what he told me.

The wolf situation has been quiet. Livestock are gone from the summer range and the wolf packs are in their usual locations.

Both the Teton Pack and the Gros Ventre Pack are in the Gros Ventre drainage. A lot of hunting is going on and quite a few hunters have seen the packs or heard them. The packs make use of what the hunters leave behind.  It has been a generally good hunting season, and the talk about wolves wiping out all the elk has died down quite a bit.

The Absaoka, Sunlight and Beartooth Packs are in their normal locations east of Yellowstone Park and west of Cody. There is still no confirmation on pups for no. 9. She lives in a heavily timbered area and is adverse to aircraft noise.

Last visuals on Absaroka were 2 black adults and 3 pups (5 had been seen earlier this year).

Last visuals on Sunlight Basin Pack were 6 adults and yearlings plus 4 pups.

The Dunoir wolves have remained in the trees, but one is radio-collared now.

The was a rumor about two weeks ago that a wolf had broken into a dog kennel in the North Fork of the Shoshone and killed some very valuable dogs. It turned out the mortality of the dogs was due to a fight between the dogs over female in heat.

There continues to be rumors of wolves on or near Carter Mountain, south of Cody. For those who follow my grizzly updates, it was at the eastern base of Carter Mountain that Wyoming Game and Fish killed the giant grizzly last week.

Finally there is a charcoal-colored lone wolf near Cora, Wyoming (that's a bit north of Pinedale). The wolf has been observed quite a bit and apparently interacts with the local dogs.
