Here is the latest Yellowstone wolf news. The most interesting events are:
Other news-
- Rose Creek wolf 52M has probably dispersed and has been seen with the "white wolf", no. 39F and the other female that was "exiled" from the Druid Peak Pack, no. 41F. Numbers 51, 52, and 53 were no. 9Fs second Yellowstone litter (Spring of 1996). 52M is a black wolf.
- It appears that two, not just one of no. 16F's pups survived the summer of 1997. She has been seen with both no.111, and what is thought to be no. 109, recently in the area she has been traveling, along the north boundary of Yellowstone near Gardiner north to Tom Miner Basin.
- Number 48F, one of the late number 27F's pups of 1996 has showed up after a long absence. She had been last spotted during the summer in the deep wilderness Thorofare region of Yellowstone. This gray female, now almost two years old, is with no. 29M, her "escape artist" older brother. They frequent the Nez Perce enclosure just north of the Lower Geyser Basin. I would suppose number 29 is still awaiting the release of his surviving pup of 1997 (92M) and the two Sawtooth yearlings that are still in the pen. Their scheduled release date is now May or June 1998.
Druid Peak Pack, no. 21M, 40F, 42F, and five pups are in the Lamar as usual.
Rose Creek Pack was last spotted near Bison Peak near the north boundary of the Park.
The nine-member Leopold Pack has been alternating between the Blacktail Deer Plateau and Mt. Everts (the big mountain just NE of Mammoth Hot Springs). This is their usual range. Number 54, an uncollared wolf born to the pack in 1996 dispersed about 1 1/2 months ago. This wolf was never collared nor had its sex determined.
Crystal Creek Pack has returned to Yellowstone from the North Absaroka Wilderness. They were located in their usually territory of the Pelican Valley.
The Soda Butte Pack was, as usual, near Heart Lake.
The Thorofare Pack was, as usual, in the Thorofare Country.
The Chief Joseph Pack, no. 34M, 33F, and 4 pups (presumably those of 34 and the late 17F) were located as has been the usual case for over a month in, or near, Daly (or "Dailey") Creek at the northwest corner of the Park.
The Washakie Pack was not included in the tracking due to bad weather in its location far to the south near the DuNoir Country and Dubois, Wyoming.
Trapping and radio-collaring is planned to resume the week of February 23. Yet to be collared or recollared are the Chief Joseph Pack, Crystal Creek Pack, and the Washakie Pack.
