Miscellaneous Yellowstone Wolf Stuff

1-5-98

Here are some Yellowstone wolf odds and ends.

Wolf 39 -- the white wolf.
Those of you who read Kevin Sanders recent report on how no. 21M came to join the Druids will find this old news, but no. 21 had dispersed from Rose Creek and was running with number 39F, the sometimes Druid Pack member, when he left her and was allowed to join the pack. Number 39 was last reported by herself in the Lamar Valley.

The Crystal Creek Pack
After spending more than a year in Pelican Valley and also near the east shore of Yellowstone Lake, this rejuvenated pack has crossed over the crest of the Absaroka Range and was last observed near the Park's East Entrance near the North Fork of the Shoshone River. Perhaps they are exploring and/or following elk migrating to winter range.   The North Fork has a highway and a fair number of people once you get downstream about 25 miles.

Soda Butte Pack
They still haven't found those wintering Jackson Hole elk.  The pack is staying to the north, northwest and northeast of Moran Junction in, or near, Grand Teton National Park and the nearby Teton Wilderness.  Elk numbers are way down on the National Elk Refuge so far this winter, not because there are few elk around, but because of the mild El Nino winter. Only 2500 are on the Refuge, compared to the usual 10,000.

Farm Bureau
Larry Bourett, long-time anti-wolf spokesman for the Wyoming Farm Bureau was quoted as saying the issue "isn't about wolves, it's about land use controls."   Sure thing, Larry, all those folks who watch wolves in Yellowstone are really itching to spend their time and effort enacting land use controls, or better yet confiscating farm land. If folks would just take a closer look, they would see that all those spotting scopes and vehicles pulled off on the Lamar Valley roadside are camouflaged UN vehicles with their sophisticated imaging and communications devices <grin> <grin><grin>.  These "grins" are for the the browns who might read this literally.  UN troops and eco-conspiracies are serious matters for them.
