Yellowstone Denning Information Late April 2001
April 27, 2001 + More dens news later on 4-27
The 2001 denning period is just about over. Here is some recent, but still very incomplete denning information for Yellowstone.
Swan Lake Pack - 152F denned in Gardner's Hole Area.
Leopold Pack - 7F - Denned in Lava Creek area. This is a new den location for no. 7F.
Rose Creek (main group) - 18F - Denned in Cottonwood Creek area.
Rose Creek (Tower group) - alpha female unknown - Probable den in Geode Creek. The alpha female has no radio collar, so her presence at a den requires visual confirmation.
Druid 42F - Denned at traditional den on Druid Peak. Closure of Druid Peak is in effect.
Druid 105F - Denned in no. 9's old den.
Druid 106F - Denned Slough Creek area.
Nez Perce Pack - 48F - Denned in Firehole River tributary (not Nez Perce Creek).
Chief Joseph - 33F - Denned at traditional den site near Daly Creek (the harassment worked!). Closure in effect.
151F (unnamed pack) - Denned in Cougar Creek. 151F dispersed from the Leopold Pack over a year ago.Off trail travel closure into some of these areas (in addition to Daly Creek and Druid Peak) will probably soon go into effect.
Later 4-27. Wyoming dens (wolves outside Yellowstone)-
Sunlight Basin Pack. Denned
Absaroka Pack. Denned
Washakie Pack. Mostly likely denned in the DuNoir (no radio collar)
Beartooth Pack. No. 9F and 77F observed to still be outside. Alpha male is not collared.
Teton Pack. Probably did not mate, but still be watched for a denning.
Gros Ventre Pack. Not denned yet. The Gros Ventre Pack did kill an elk calf on the Elk Refuge last week, the first documented wolf kill on the Refuge this year, although the Teton Pack might was on a carcass (kill?) at the Refuge, a week earlier.
