Yellowstone Park pup information

June 27, 2001

Here is the latest in the watch for Yellowstone Park pups in 2001. The pup count looks low this year based on visual sightings, but many are in areas where it is hard to spot pups. Nevertheless, I feel the pup numbers in the Park will be less than in 2000.

Druid Peak Pack. This is largest number of pups for any pack so far this year -- 7 pups. Four are 42's and 3 are 103's. Last year there was, of course, an incredible 21 pups.  I understand the pack currently totals 32 wolves including the new pups.

Rose Creek Pack. No pups observed yet in either of the pack's two groups.  No. 18F's group is mostly near Cottonwood Creek, which is thickly timbered.

Leopold Pack. Just one pup. Although two dens were reported earlier, this seems to have been an error.

Swan Lake Pack. Two pups have been observed.

Chief Joseph Pack. Three pups have been observed.

Mollies Pack. The pack was thought to have denned, but no pups have been seen.

Nez Perce Pack. This is the Park's second largest pack.  They were thought to have denned, but no pups have been observed.

Yellowstone Delta Pack. They have a new den site this year (out of the hostile outfitter's way), and one pup has been seen.

Sheep Mountain Pack (just north of the Park). Denned, but no pups observed.

Cougar Creek Pair (just NE of West Yellowstone). No pups observed, but it is in an area of thick lodgepole pine regeneration from the fires of 1988.

155F and 161M (this is really quite a way west of the Park).  They have been named the Freezeout Pack.  They have 4 pups in the West Fork of the Madison River (Gravelly Range).

Meanwhile in Idaho, 44 pups have been identified in  9 packs. 14 to 17 more possible packs are yet to be investigated!
