Yellowstone Wolf News Feb. 2001
Feb. 12, 2001
There is quite a bit of interesting wolf news from Yellowstone Park and just nearby.
The Druid Peak Pack is still 27 strong, and more pups will be on the way. No. 21M, the alpha male has been observed mating with 42F, the alpha female, 105F, and an attempt yesterday with 106F.
In the Rose Creek Pack venerable no. 18F with observed mating with newly collared large black yearling 207M.
The "Tower Group" of the Rose Creek Pack was observed to have moved west to Mt. Everts, which is Leopold Territory. The Leopold Pack was spread out with some of its members on Mt. Everts too.
The Chief Joseph Pack, after spending most of the winter in the backcountry was above the Anderson Ranch at Tom Miner Basin north of the Park. They have killed numerous sheep dogs on this ranch and they denned in the vicinity last spring. They were eventually harassed back into the Park. There has been no trouble so far.
The 3 radio-collared brothers from the old Sheep Mountain Pack, which were released from the Turner Ranch in December, are doing well, but have split and joined new wolves. Brothers 189M and 196M were with 155F, a disperser from the Rose Creek Pack. They were north of the Park in the mountains west of Paradise Valley (Gallatin Range). Brother 195M was with 4 uncollared new wolves in Slip 'n Slide Creek area a few miles north of Gardiner.
The Nez Perce Pack, after some forays onto the northern range was back in the center of the Park.
The Yellowstone Delta Pack (formerly Soda Butte Pack), 13-strong, was observed on The Promontory, a long peninsula into Yellowstone Lake's southern waters.
Researchers thought they picked up a weak signal from ancient no. 5F, former alpha female of the Crystal Creek (now Molly's Pack). She has been alone for a year. Her signal was from near Garnet Hill, but whether it was really her signal is problematic.
