Yellowstone wolf dispersers found far to the west

3-22-99

A tracking flight looking for wolves that have killed 3 cattle in the Big Hole Valley of SW Montana has turned up two long-missing Yellowstone wolves. They are not responsible for the depredations.

Located was Washakie yearling 132M (now almost 2-years old). He was not far from Dillon, Montana in Little Sage Creek and moving west. It is possible there are other wolves in the Dillon area. There have been recent reports. Did the two missing pups of Nez Pack born in 1997 survive there?

Also located was the third surviving Sawtooth Pup (now almost 3 years old). Located was 65F in the Beaverhead Mountains of the Idaho/Montana border near Lemhi Pass (the famous location from the Lewis and Clark Expedition). The other two of the original ten Sawtooth pups are with the Nez Perce Pack in west central Yellowstone.  The remaining seven died of various human related causes -- autos, gunfire (all legal), plus an M44 (accident).

The three are all that is left of the former Sawtooth Pack of the Rocky Mountain Front near Augusta, Montana. The original ten pups were brought to Yellowstone in the early summer of 1996 and raised in the Nez Perce Pen until they were released a year later. ADC killed off their parents.

Story from back 1996 when the pups came to Yellowstone.
