Pups for the Leopold Pack;
Nez Pen Opened.

(6-23-98) addition on 7-13

Pups have finally been observed for the Leopold Pack. Doug Smith observed four pups from the air yesterday. Further observation has since revealed five pups.

In other news, yesterday, June 22, the back panel of the Nez Perce enclousure was finally opened, allowing the four wolves and four pups to leave.  Except for one escape, these wolves have been in the pen since October 1997.  The wolves are being monitored closely.

The Soda Butte Pack has moved back to their traditional territory in Yellowstone.   They were observed yesterday at Trail Creek near the SE arm of Yellowstone Lake. This is where they were re-released back in October 1996.

This pack was one of the original three packs reintroduced to Yellowstone.  They got their name from the location of their original pen near Soda Butte Creek in the NE part of Yellowstone.  This pack, however, has spent little of its time in that area. This is now the territory of the Druid Peak Pack.
